“…time’s running out,” a statement used by almost everyone, every day. It’s not only part of Tiger High’s Catacombs After Party, it’s my reality as I sit here after devouring a Hot Pocket (if you read my words regularly, I do eat those every other day). The bright red X’s on my 99 Cent Store calendar are adding up and as the start of an good times road trip nears, I should be happy about it, but time…I need more time. I have to write about this indie group Tiger High who come from Memphis, TN with a brand of rock that’s a little psychedelic and a lotta SXSW inspired, but I also have interviews to edit, more reviews to do and I have to write about why I love Zachery Quinto (don’t ask, well ask if you may) all before I head out or else I’ll be freaking out about it the whole time.
Before I have a meltdown as bad as Jessie Spano on caffeine pills, let me tell you more about Catacombs After Party. Like with other reviews I’ve done this week, I’m going to give you the bad news first. While I borrowed a line from “Lightspeed,” it wasn’t quick enough to get my full attention. “Leave It Alone” and “Cry, Crocodile” were also ones to leave by the side of the road on my upcoming road trip.
But there were some you’d spare some extra time for like “So Long.” That’s the track that made me think “SXSW” for this band. I have never been to Austin when this music monster takes over, but from all I’ve heard from others, this band sounds like one that’d be playing in a hot dive bar. You’d stumble in looking for a bathroom and stay to take in the rest of Tiger High after falling for their gritty, indie sound. Sticking around you might here “Where Are Our Arms” and think it’s something one of the Lisbon girls in The Virgin Suicides listened to. It just has this iridescent indie flick feel to it.
Since I started this review I’ve spent time pretending to be in a fringe vest at a farmer’s market while “Get The Picture” played. I then snapped back into reality to let you know that if you’re a fan of Hollis Brown and Coke Weed, then you’ll likely like what Tiger High is doing on Catacombs After Party because you’re a fan of that hippy style in the modern age. Catacombs After Party is out now on Trashy Creatures Records/Burger Records.
