Quiet as a mouse and introverted until you break my shell, that’s me. So you’d never guess I was in theater in high school, right? Okay, it wasn’t by choice. I was put in there my freshman year, but was mostly kept busy in the background. To this day I carry with me three memories from there…The boy I still have a crush on, singing The Ataris and my monologue from Never Been Kissed (you have to take from reality). That all came to mind after my time with Homage’s Insignificant because it wasn’t the music that was moving, it was the lyrics that read like a dramatic monologue from a play that has not yet been made. The hardcore style of the music then transformed them into a pissed off production, cue the curtains.
Of course “Groundwork” had that speech thing going on since the intro ended with a Martin Luther King Jr. quote “…the foundation of such a method is love.” That kick started me into just wanting to read the music instead of listening, so I listened, read and then listened again to the rest of Insignificant. Sticking with just the music first, it’s hardcore. There’s not much else you can say. If you like that loud and rough style, then this is your new favorite band. Moving back to the words, “Albiet” questioned life and had a lot of self-doubt in between every line. On the other hand “Definitive” was like an unconventional thank you note.
If I had the internet in high school, let alone a blog and had come across Homage’s Insignificant, I would’ve asked my theater teacher if I could use one of their songs as my required audition piece. When it comes to the music however, it’s too scary for my wussy ears to take on. But if you’re into that bone crushing sound and bands like The Acacia Strain and A Hero A Fake, then Homage is waiting for you. Insignificant is out now.
