Never Shout Never: Indigo

Social interaction isn’t my strong point. It takes a lot for me to even say hello to someone, let alone ask them questions while people look on. So why’d I get into this? No clue, but a few years ago I had a not so great encounter with little Christofer Drew of Never Shout Never at Warped Tour, and that kind of bummed me out when it came to interviewing artists for a while. But as the late, great Aaliyah once said, “Dust yourself off and try again.” I did and there are no hard feelings towards him or his music. That said, I went into the new Never Shout Never album, Indigo, with a wide open mind.

All in all Indigo is an indie pop record that has a few good songs here and there, and a couple that’d I’d rather not listen to again. Let’s go with…the not so great and get them out of the way. “Sorry” is a great title because it wasn’t the best for me on Indigo. While that wasn’t an apology I wanted to hear, “Honey-Dew” was more like a honey-don’t. It was like a bad hoedown and seemed like it was being sung through a weird filter.

As far as songs that gave me a little more to smile about, there were three to shout out. Lead single “Magic” is a song that’d I’d find myself singing if I listened to it about 10 more times. It’s cute, but unlike many songs, the choruses actually take second place to the verses. Just right now I found myself dancing in my seat to “The Look,” so I have to say that’s a good sign that it’s one to check out. Last one to get some extra attention is “All Mine.” I swear it sampled that Pussycat Dolls “Don’t Cha” song. Listen closely and you’ll hear it…You’ll also hear the F-bomb, which when listening to this kind of music sounds like hearing swearing in a Disney movie. Christofer has such an innocent set of pipes, that it’s just weird…

Indigo is for people who loved Panic At The Disco’s Pretty Odd (and yes, the ! is gone because that album was when they dropped it), and Hellogoodbye’s Would It Kill You? You’re a fan of indie music, but like it to still have some youth in it. You’re not ready to fully accept you love the sounds Vh1, and hold onto MTVu. Indigo is out November 13th, so get it if you’ve loved everything Never Shout Never has done up until now, like those above albums, or just want to take a chance on something new. Also, if you like what you hear, NSN is hitting the road November 20- December 21.
