“I wish I could be someone else” is a statement I say more often than not. It also happens to be the first line you hear from Echoes de Luxe’s Hold On EP, as “Rat Race” offers up a clean and crisp escape. After the big musical build up, you get this song that could be compared to The Killers.
“Rat Race” along with “The Ride” are what I like to call “radio rock.” That style of rock that’s more intricately put together, as if stained glass; it’s pretty at first, but gritty if picked apart. In this case, it’s the lyrical content that gives it edginess. Overall it’s the type of rock that allows fans to get dolled up and sip wine at a show, and it doesn’t look weird. I mean, if you did that at a Slayer show…well you get it.
Not only is the music very similar to The Killers, but the vocals are as well. Just like Brandon Flowers, there’s a dramatic way that Echoes de Luxe give songs like “Dead & Gone” life. Then there’s “Hold On,” a song that’s more or less a friendly note of encouragement.
There were a couple of tracks that weren’t hitting the right notes though. “Digging A Hole” was a weird change of pace compared to the rest of the record. Then there was “Rotten Wine.” It verged on creepy with just the music, but then went off the edge with “waiting for the animals to chew you up and spit you out.”
Echoes de Luxe’s Hold On is for people who like The Killers (if you didn’t pick up on that before), as well as The Filthy Pillows and Apple Horse. Hold On is available now for those who want music that’s attractive, but has a sense of disturbing drama to it.
