There’s half a cake in the kitchen that’s tempting me. To make matters worse, I’m on the edge of my seat over Food Network’s Halloween Wars. They’re making evil clown sculptures out of cake, candy and of course, pumpkins. I fight my urges of gluttony by focusing on Freelance Whales and their new album Diluvia. They’re an indie band from the mean streets of Queens, NY who utilize every aspect of synthesizers and the banjo to create a Williamsburg wet dream.
“Aeolus” opens the listener to a world that sounds goes along with the season; spooky. The music, while calming, sounds like spirits circling about. Maybe they’re warning about the tail end of the record that seems to lack in keeping one interested. All the stars shine at the start. “Land Features” contains soft banjo plucking that will garner the interest of Mumford & Sons fans. On the other hand, “Follow Through” goes the other direction with its 80’s charm and computer like ways. Doris Cellar shines in “Spitting Image,” and “Locked Out” gives you something to think about with the idea of having all you need to go anywhere you please.
The cake didn’t win this round, so thanks to Freelance Whales for the distraction…for the most part. The first half of Diluvia is fitting for an indie pop record. It’s the latter half that didn’t do as well to keep me entertained. Fans of Jukebox the Ghost and Miniature Tigers will want to check out Diluvia to see which half they take under their musical wing, out October 9th on Mom & Pop Music/Frenchkiss Records. Also, make sure to check Freelance Whales out on tour now through the first week of November.
