For those old enough to remember having to get their favorite album on cassette, I commend you. It was rough being so into the music and then having to take the tape out to flip it over to finish the job, but thankfully Sparrows is one of the handfuls of bands giving their fans the option for that retro listening experience. Their EP Goliath has been rereleased on cassette, and there aren’t many, so it’s best to get it while you can.
Having not listened to a tape since Backstreet Boys Millennium came out 13 years ago, the sound of a cassette isn’t fresh in my mind. So if you want to know how it differs from a CD or Mp3, than you’re just going to have to pick it up. But let me tell you, cassettes did the job; they just weren’t convenient for the changing times. Now they’re just nifty pieces to have in your collection, much like a vinyl; a showpiece if you will.
The sound we can talk about is the actual music on Goliath…A majority of the songs have long, intricate intros that will make real musicians overjoyed, but it’s “Sleeping in the Seconds Between Breaths” that clocks in at seven minutes that surprised me by being a favorite. While some of the other tracks were a bit hard to understand in the vocal department, this one was straightforward and had a Taking Back Sunday feel to it. Well TBS without the repetitive nature and poppy like hooks. The other song that will perk an ear of interest is “Salesmen at the Pulpit, Congregation of Sheep.” One can listen to this jab at organized religion over and over again…well if you get it on tape, you’ll be hitting “rewind” a lot.
When vinyl is still too mainstream for you, hit up Sparrows’ Goliath on cassette. Fans of Thrice and The Receiving Ends of Sirens will enjoy this new music on an old format. So order it right now and brag about it.
