Golden Mixtape

Day…shit, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve had a job that requires me to keep a schedule. So as I headed to Hollywood in the LA heat, Animal Parts self-titled LP kept me company. Actually that album was the only friend I had today as every other friend is a real adult with a job, one canceled on me and another is a social butterfly prepping his wings for nighttime company.

Animal Parts was an appropriate companion as the only plan I had for this Thursday was to see the New Girl bus. Exciting, I know. So as I stood in a crowded bus in the middle of the afternoon, “Always” played as the perfect backdrop to the adventure as a man and woman took care of the vocals much like Zooey Deschanel does in her group She & Him. However, the song was poking fun at me without knowing because it was about always being with someone, while I set out on a solo adventure.

“Behave” will get a thumbs up from classic Disney fans as the ukulele and whistling cause it to sound similar to the intro to Robin Hood. It’s as quick as that song too, not even making it to two minutes. While that’s a nice bit of nostalgia, “The Bird Song” was a somber note. It sounded like something you’d listen to while dying alone in a cabin in the middle of the woods.

Another pair to note…“ A Dream Where I Break Horses” as a rhyming cascade that made it a bit Dr. Suess. The rhyme scheme wasn’t the only reason though. It also had odd imagery, just look at the title and you can imagine the rest. At the end you end up on Google looking up the meaning of dreams. The other one to note is “Poets.” It wasn’t the best, but at the same time the light, kickback mood of it made it a nice song to walk along Hollywood and Vine in the middle of August.

Towards the end of the trip and the record, things took a downward turn as the sweat was collecting under my arms (I’m such a lady, I know) and the last few songs on the record failed to make a mark; “Running,” “The Trick With Your Heart (Prt3)” and “What Our Love Is.”

The New Girl bus wasn’t as enjoyable as one would imagine because I couldn’t play the games with Animal Parts. But all in all the record was something fans of Mumford & Sons and Justin Vernon would be into. So if you like that indie folk sound, get in on the Animal Parts’ Animal Parts. It’s a good friend when everyone else cancels on you, and it’s out August 21st!
