Golden Mixtape

It’s about 2:30am and I’m not the least bit tired. What was supposed to be a couple weeks delay in knowing if me and the nine others were going to be hired has turned into a few and we fear it’ll be over a month before we have a final answer. So instead of getting a good night’s rest and waking up early to apply crazily for jobs…I’m sitting with the volume low as It’s Always Sunny plays, and I write about Fozzy’s new album Sin and Bones.

It’s appropriate I’m writing while a comedy is playing in the background because I went into this laughing. Fozzy is a metal band that consists of a dude that I loved over a decade ago when I was a WWF fangirl, Chris Jericho. Now Fozzy existed back in the day, and I only laughed because I would’ve never bet they’d still be releasing albums long after I hung up my Monday Night Raw tees.

Going into this I was like, okay, really? Where do I begin…then I was a little embarrassed because “Sandpaper” and “Sin and Bones” sounded like something a Papa Roach fan would like. Embarrassed because after all these years, Papa Roach is a band I still like to go and support (it’s the trailer park in me). So you have some newer P. Roach to compare and contrast to, but what about the rest, where’s that metal?

“A Passed Life” showed off the softer side of the metal head, while “Spider In My Mouth” for my senses tingling and made my pen write down an essay of notes. It starts off creepy like a nursery rhyme melody, “itsy bitsy spider,” then it’s metal which the music is, but Chris’ voice comes across a little soft for what I imagined. It’s masculine, but not what I think of. Then I remember that I’m used to getting new school metal where you’re not really supposed to make out the words, and it kind of crosses the line into scream and hardcore.

Then two have to get shout outs for their pop culture relevance. “She’s My Addiction” is the next theme song for Bret Michael’s Rock of Love…If it ever makes a comeback. So you can only imagine it’s one the ladies like to move to. Last note, with “Dark Passenger” the song didn’t stand out as much as me questioning the whole time, “Is this about Dexter?” The Dexter?

It’s almost 3am now and I’m not feeling anymore like Rob Thomas (pop culture reference #44635 for Golden Mixtape). With Sunny coming to an end and my eyes weighing heavily, I will wrap up Fozzy’s Sin and Bones quickly…If you’re the type of person who goes through life with Mercy Drive and Downstait as their soundtrack, then Fozzy’s brand of metal if right up your alley. Sin and Bones is out now and can guarantee you a mix of heavy and light tracks that showcase masculinity and sensitivity.
