We all have our anxieties, and mine are slightly more extreme than others. You can only imagine what happens when a beloved band of mine decides to release new music. (Hint: Paper bags and cotton balls.) Before I get a little serious, slightly emotional and start sounding like a bridesmaid who is destined to be forever alone, let’s flashback to September 2011 when I first met The Gromble:
The quirky art that graced the cover of their self-titled EP made me somewhat hesitant to play the thing. But considering it was late summer, I figured I would take one final leap into the unknown. I’m not sure I ever landed. At least, not without influence. The Gromble’s catchy pop riffs and imagery-filled lyrics kept me afloat, and gradually wanting more.(I say gradually because the band does a fantastic job of keeping one interested for a lengthy period of time. Their sound is so rich it takes awhile to digest it all completely.) Though, I wasn’t sure what that more would sound like, as the Southern Californian’s band is very distinct. At best, I would define it as indie-pop; musicianship with genuine danceable beats, straying from the use of flashy gimmicks and poor insults like Justin Bieber’s burn on Prince William.
Settling back into the present, The Gromble’s latest single, “Don’t Stand a Chance,” debuted on July 17th, and it is not a far stray from past endeavors. It’s a soft ballad with familiarity. The guitars, much like the vocals, are recognizable in how they sound, not in how they are played/sung. However familiar, there is still a moment of spontaneity. Think of that instant when the fireworks are over, and out of nowhere, a forgotten rocket shoots into the air and bursts, leaving its final mark on the night sky. Towards the end of the track, I caught that firework before my earphones turned back to silence.
“Don’t Stand a Chance,” is now available on SoundCloud. And honestly, guys? I don’t think you stand a chance of hating this jam.
