Living in the vibrant city of LA, you’d think on a Saturday I’d be out with a shot of vodka and a line of men asking for my number so I could later ignore their texts. Nope. Instead I am sitting on the floor in Lisa Frank looking shorts, iCarly muted on the TV and relating too much to The Ugly Club. Well, more their band name than their album You Belong To The Minutes. Their indie rock sound with a hint of psychedelics tossed in isn’t what I’d personally head towards in the jukebox, but there’s a scene out there for them.
Alone at night with one lamp on, “David Foster Wallace” served up an intro that had me spooked. It was as if electronic music was going to start, a bass was about to drop, but it never came. Instead the vocals came through with ease and this “cool cat” of a track entered the room. Remember that line of men in my “supposed” night? Well this song would be the man who came on strong with all the right lines right when you sat down at the bar. He’s good, but being first you have to be curious and move on to the next. “Some Life” is okay, he’s got a trippy sound. “Let’s Sleep Around,” other than his name you just move on because of the falsetto going on.
Then you meet two contenders you might take home towards the end. “Unravelling You” and “Wasted On You.” “Unravelling You” is slow, smooth and works hard to get your attention. At first the slow pace is kind of an excuse to hit skip, but the seduction of the music keeps your finger at bay. Giving it a chance to play on, you learn it picks up its game and ends strong. “Wasted On You” is a cheery one that stands out from most of the other songs on You Belong To The Minutes. When the whole record has run its course, you go back to the start and “Loosen Up.” It’s as fun as “Wasted On You” and as sensual sounding as “Unravelling You;” best of both worlds.
Although I’m technically still alone in my tacky pajama shorts, musically I’m taken with The Ugly Club’s You Belong To The Minutes. So if you’re looking for music to keep you company, make a date with You Belong To The Minutes on July 13th and get The Ugly Club’s debut record.
