Seven months into the year and people are already starting to make “best of” lists based on everything from albums to fashion trends. I am no different. I Call Fives’ Someone That’s Not You EP has already made its mark on my personal collection. I recalled saying it reminded me of the reason I feel in love with pop punk in the first place. With their first full length, I Call Fives, that idea still reigns true. It was as if they took a course in pop punk 101 taught by New Found Glory’s Steve Klein and learned what they had to do with their words, and then headed to All Time Low’s “fundamentals with instrumentals” course and learned a thing or two about making things pop.
Other than being a picture perfect representation of what makes that style what it is, I Call Fives is a record with heartbreak serving as the gooey center, with some accolades of perseverance sprinkled in. “The Fall Guy” and “Backup Plan” are essential songs to listen to when raging about an ex. And it was nice to hear “Backup Plan” make the transition from EP to LP because that song makes both albums, well, great. With the sad heartache ones out of the way you get some fortune cookie, words of wisdom in “Wrong Things” and “Regrets and Setbacks” with lines like “I won’t lose out anymore” and “don’t give up.”
Every time the record hit “Sleep Well,” I thought…Please oh please let New Found Glory take this band on the road when they do their Sticks and Stones 10 year anniversary tour. I also thought, if I Call Fives continues to make records like the two they put out in 2012, we won’t be saying “remember that one band…” any time soon. Then hopefully their fans can look forward to their 10 year anniversary tours a decade from now. I Call Fives’ I Call Fives is out July 10th on Pure Noise Records, and they’re on Warped Tour July 13th through the end, August 5th.
