The Hollows: The Hollows EP

After a week filled with Warped Tour and coming into out July feature of geek induced bands, The Hollows’ The Hollows EP is an oddball we welcome to our Golden sphere. They’re a self-proclaimed roots-rock band, but after listening to the trio of tunes they offer on their EP, I beg to differ. It was as if each track was a different person speaking on behalf of The Hollows.

“August” told of a southern get together. Its robust nature all the way through will put listeners in a good mood. Each member of The Hollows is skilled in 2-3 instruments and they take full advantage in this shindig. Its bluegrass feel made me have to look up the band. Imagining a group of older fellows, I was met with youth filled faces that just seem to appreciate music that’s less mainstream and more about what they want to do.

With “Jepsens Creek,” I didn’t want to listen to what it had to say. Following “August,” this one fell short in excitement and wasn’t on the same musical path as the month before. It was an odd transition to make. Last to speak up, “Carried Away” had another tone of voice. Clocking in at over seven minutes, this one track is longer than the previous combined. As it played on, it took on a country/soft rock of the 70’s demeanor. Imagine a video starring the late Farrah Fawcett in that sepia tone, and you’d have the video for “Carried Away.”

The Hollows’ The Hollows EP is three songs deep and doesn’t really follow a pattern. The uneven road it travels offers a little bit of something for everyone…If you’re into folk music with a hint of bluegrass, spoonful of country and a dash of soft rock mixed in bowl of strong instrumentation. If this sounds like you’re thing, then get yourself a copy now. It dropped June 26th and is waiting for you.
