Sitting on the sidelines watching a shirts VS skins game at a Hollywood park listening to What’s Eating Gilbert’s The Nashville Session transforms this scene into a sock hop. I can only hope to be asked to dance…But in all seriousness this side project from New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert is reminiscent of 50’s jukebox anthems.
“Babe” is a long way from Chad’s days in hardcore Shai Hulud days. This can only be called a song for a gal you’re going steady with. A sensitive yet upbeat track that puts images of Chad looking like Ponyboy strapped with a guitar singing his heart out to Cherry.
You go from bobbing along to “Babe” to swaying to “Lonely Road.” the accompaniment of the female backup singers gives this one a slight upper hand between the two. It’s a modern-day American Bandstand performance in my head.
Remember when New Found Glory had Coming Home and it was a good record style wise, it just wasn’t what you were use to from them? Well that’s What’s Eating Gilbert. Chad’s been at this solo project awhile and while it’s not super infused pop punk, it’s good for what it is. You really can’t compare the two because it’d be like comparing Coldstone and Yougurtland; both awesome for different reasons.
What’s Eating Gilbert’s The Nashville Session is out June 19th and if you like simple and sweet country sounding music (Nashville…we get it now) that’s laid on top of some guitar work that’s a little like The Crickets, then this is what you need to get your hands on. And you can catch Chad with the rest of New Found Glory all summer long on Warped Tour.
