A classic film once said, “You want intimidation, I’ll show you intimidation.” Whether or not the members of EVA have seen Little Giants is beyond me, but intimidation is definitely a major part of their sound; a mix of hardcore, rock and a smidge of rap. All those elements can be found on their new album, Chavela.
Things start out in a séance like fashion with “Infinite” as the line “we are infinite” is repeated and creeps into your mindset and keeps you on edge, as if something is going to pop out from around the corner to spook you. And just like that, “Burn Book” begins and the quick lyrics are laid over hardcore guitars, and you have to ask yourself by the end if EVA donned Korn tees back in the day because there were times that I felt as if I were listening to Jonathan Davis.
“Pro-Wrestling is Real; People Are Fake (Feat. Rick from This Is Hell)” was a bounty of sound and verged schizophrenic in a way. It had that abrasive quality that I’d come to conclude as EVA’s overall style, but then threw some clean vocals in the mix. The back and forth only added to the obvious take on critics and haters. To close off Chavela, they offered up “Chavela.” The best part of this one, the rapping skills tossed in. It wasn’t like Linkin Park or anything, but more a fusion of their hardcore selves and a flow that worked out well.
EVA Chavela is an intimidating record that Woe, Is Me and Of Mice & Men fans will want to pop into their lives. It’s not for the weak eared folks who like their music light and airy…at all. It’s a badass album, ‘nough said.
