They say stars are in the sky, but in Los Angeles, they can be anywhere from struggling actors posing as waiters to bartenders with a song in their hearts. That was the case for Mike DeLay and Leilani Francisco when the pair met and became not only involved in the ways of love, but blossomed musically together over the years creating Tic Tic Boom. They adopted the DIY style early on and have continued that aesthetic with their new EP, Before the Sun Rises.
A club feel as the synth sound is strong right off the bat with “For Feeling,” so much so the track tip toed around an alien sound. From out of this world, to not with this world, “Ghost of You” played up to its name. The electronic haunting music came across as what could be a symbol for the future of mankind. With human relying so much on social media and technology, will we be spooked by the remnants of peoples Facebook and Twitter accounts one day as oppose to their soul? Yeah, I just got deep. Now to dig my way out.
For a dance party, “Cells” may be a hit because of its length, but it came across too long for an iPod. Another long track ended the EP, “Constellation Boy.” This one didn’t drag on due to the laser show scene it induced in my train of thought. Wait, “constellation”…Alien again? I see what they did there.
Tic Tic Boom’s Before the Sun Rises came out April 24th so get on it if your iPod also houses bands like Proprietors of the Earth and World of Science. In LA? Then you can catch Tic Tic Boom at Lot 1 Cafe in Echo Park throughout May, and in Pasadena on June 2nd for the Eat|See|Hear event.
