Judging things from afar makes the results come back skewed. Moving Mountains is a band I’d heard of and being associated with Warped Tour, I drew conclusions as to what they sounded like…I was wrong. Expecting another band with lyrics about not fitting in layered over pop punk beats was nothing I got when I turned on their new EP New Light. Instead of the expected, I got a serene rock taste.
After listening once through, a second spin was taken and “Alleviate” was appreciated so much more. Combining provoking lyrics like “you can’t wake up if you don’t dream” with an easy going backdrop resulted in the shining star of New Light. Then “Ode We Will Bury Ourselves” and “Where the Bodies Lie” seemed to go hand in hand. Both were peaceful on the inside, but the titles danced on the disturbing side a bit. If one was to just let this pair play without taking in the guts of each, they’d just think they were great company for a long “clear my head” drive. Last on New Light was “8105” showing off Moving Mountains musicianship ability; very instrument heavy.
The tranquil ascetic of Moving Mountains New Light makes it the right fit for fans of the rest of their catalog as well as bands like Athletics and Gates. New Light is out now on Triple Crown Records and you can catch Moving Mountains supporting Coheed and Cambria for a couple more weeks and then hitting the UK through the end of June.
