Twin Trip: Twin Trip

A police escort on the freeway. It’s not a chase interrupting reruns of Dr. Phil, it’s just a film crew hoping to get the perfect shot. They distract me from Twin Trip’s Twin Trip for a moment…or two…but then I was back to listening to their debut on Flower Records. It provided a somewhat somber, different and artsy atmosphere as I sat across from a mid-twenty man adorned in Insane Clown Posse gear.

The record begins with “New World” a slow track that I was weary to discover at first. A slow track, I wasn’t quick to jump on board with it. As the record played on it was the irony and ivory that were the first string players on album.

“Heavy Load” has a line that seemed to be the most ironic for a musician, “…never settle for less than gold.” In a world where the odds of making it big in music is one in however many people are trying to utilize Youtube. But one could assume Twin Trip weren’t talking about the actual monetary value of gold, but the idea that gold can be whatever the individual deems worthy and for Twin Trip, it’s their art. Another ironic note comes with “Clowns.” It wasn’t a fun day at the circus, but one that reminded me of the one in We’re Back; dark. And while “Dream of You” made me want to drift away, the piano woke me up and presented a theatrical break in the record.

After I made my way through the dozen, I went back to pick the one to cast a star upon and call my pick as the song for everyone to give a chance. “Radio Friendly” is not only the best sound wise, but a smart ass smack in the face to the radio industry. Radio hits are usually three to four minutes long and kick in right away…”Radio Friendly” is none of that. After a minute of music, lyrics greet you and clocks in at over five and a half minutes. This song solidifies what it means to be a rebel rocker.

Twin Trip is for that person in life who likes things served with a side of difference. They claim to be an alternative rock group, but the ups and downs of the record give you everything from a Radiohead vibe to lighter delights (“Four Wise Monkeys”).  If this is the kind of dish you like, then make sure to save the date and get Twin Trip’s Twin Trip on April 24th and keep an eye out for dates to their West coast tour.
