With a couple of movies coming out in 2012 based on a tale where several little guys who play a pivotal role, it’s only fitting that seven friends from LA who call themselves The Mowgli’s get themselves in the game as well, right? Although “Heigh Ho” isn’t in the roster, this band of seven merry men and women from the San Fernando Valley have a few songs up their sleeves for the world now, and an album full for later.
The SoCal band has a carefree spirit that’s a better fit for the northern part of the state, which is fitting that their EP is called San Francisco and starts off with a track by the same name. As “San Francisco” played I forgot about the bad taste that city leaves in my mouth, the carsick feeling on those hills disappears and images of a day in a Golden Gate Park comes to mind. You can see The Mowgli’s playing this happy ditty barefoot in the middle of the greenery. A song you would definitely prescribe as an upper.
From the North back to their stomping grounds, “Slowly Slowly” has a clean sound that illuminates with positive energy. Lastly listeners will get “Carry Your Will” which has this slow but appealing build up with the inclusion what sounds like all seven members repeating “let your faith guide your faith.” It starts so vulnerable but with the power of the group, ends strong.
San Francisco is for fans of music that embodies California’s spirit. Girls and guys who live in flip flops and ride their beach cruisers with bands like Rooney and Phantom Planet acting as the soundtrack to their reality. The Mowgli’s offer up San Francisco for digitally and on vinyl for now, but will be back in May with an album. So check out the EP and if you’re in town for SXSW, check them out there, and in their hood, LA after that.
