Going from an ensemble to the being a lone act is much like moving into a metropolitan area alone; an exciting force that makes you grow as an individual. Erin Passmore has stepped away from Rah Rah for a second to take on Downtown. And for the indie-rock fans who ved her in the band, never fear because she’s still got indie in her that guides her through her solo adventure.
Beginning with the end is out of the norm, but let’s back track for a second with Erin Passmore’s Downtown. As the last track “Captain” acts as the anchor for the entire album. Her voice takes center stage in a stripped down fashion, but every star needs a supporting cast.
“Into the Woods” plays like a scene out of a teen movie; the renowned quiet girl finally stands up on the last day of class to show her peers what she’s made of; soft and gentle, but picking up as the song went on. On the flip side, title track, “Downtown” could’ve been played in Sex and the City had it been set in the 70’s with its vintage energy. Another member of the cast, “Sad Song,” has the sensitivity of Mclachlan with a pinch of Fiona Apple edge, which resulted in a vocal comparison to Paula Cole.
Downtown is for anyone who loved what Erin had to give in Rah Rah and for some newcomers who are into the likes of Cole and Jann Arden. So get it when you can…February 28th, and enjoy.
